It’s no surprise to many that I chose Paris as the destination to celebrate my 30th birthday. It’s in close competition with Rome to mark the top spot as my favourite European city. Paris is the perfect place to romanticise life and, despite originally coming close to booking a trip to Bali in Indonesia, had overcome my desire to visit anywhere else. In addition to celebrating my birthday, I got engaged to my boyfriend of five years, Tom, so it was certainly a trip to remember!
Why visit Paris in March?
Truly, falling in love with Paris is effortless, especially in the turning of seasons from winter to spring. The quaint streets lined with terraced buildings, showcasing colourful volets and romantic balconies, made me feel like a rom-com actress when walking through them. The Eiffel Tower stands proudly in the heart of the city, shimmering at night while passers-by turn to al fresco restaurants for an evening glass of wine. The creme brule is delightful, too! It’s the ideal destination to get lost in the magic and truly escape from the pressures of day-to-day life.
What is the weather like in Paris in March?
With the early signs of spring, Paris has a beautiful atmosphere in March. During my trip, the air was free from any icy bite and we weren’t cold walking around the city. In fact, we were wearing light jackets for the most part, except for one afternoon when we didn’t require jackets at all! Bring an umbrella though, as a long walk in the rain one morning resulted in me having frizzy hair for the rest of the day.
What to wear in Paris in March
I get most of my style inspiration from the French and am a repeat buyer of brands such as VEJA, Chanel and La Roche Posay. I packed my suitcase intentionally, considering the practicality of clothes for rides at Disneyland Paris. I kept my colour palette neutral and black to create a capsule wardrobe for the trip, alongside a couple of dresses for good measure! Paris is a casual city, so a good pair of jeans, a selection of tops for layering and your favourite pair of trainers are must-brings. I layered a cropped denim jacket over a hoodie for added warmth.
Tips to visit Paris in March
Plan your itinerary
Careful planning ensures that your trip is intentional to do what’s important to you. I stress the “careful”, because it can quickly become a balancing act of planning too much and not enough. We didn’t squeeze back-to-back activities in and prioritised time to have a glass of wine, take hundreds of photos at the Parisian attractions and return to the hotel for a coffee and a freshen-up, when required. For more information, I’ve provided the itinerary from my trip to Paris in March 2024 in the next section.
Bring comfortable shoes
Having climbed the tallest mountains in England and Wales, I assumed I would be comfortable with the amount of walking in Paris. But, I was quickly humbled! In particular, Disneyland Paris proved difficult, and I was relieved to have breaks in our schedule to return to the hotel and rest. My advice is to pack more than one pair of trainers (with more cushion than VEJAs) and even a pair of walking boots.
Use the Paris Métro
The Paris Métro was by far the easiest method of transportation in the city. In fact, we didn’t get a single Uber for the entirety of our time in Paris. The language can be adjusted on the ticket machines for navigation, so getting a ticket is fairly straightforward. If you have any trouble, there are staff on-site at the stations. After a few wines, I realised we’d left our passports in the safety deposit box of our previous hotel at Disneyland Paris! Luckily, it was simply a case of jumping on the Paris Métro back to Disneyland Paris to retrieve them.
Buy attraction tickets in advance
The main attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum and Moulin Rouge require bookings in advance. I recommend booking these attractions one month ahead to avoid disappointment. It also helps to inform your itinerary for the trip. Albeit not a main attraction, I booked a river cruise along the Seine before we visited Paris. I aligned the Eiffel Tower booking to fit perfectly afterwards as the attractions were within a five-minute walk of each other, meaning that we weren’t running to and fro.
Itinerary for a trip to Paris
I created an itinerary for six days that, for us, was the perfect blend of action and relaxation. Adjust your itinerary to your requirements, timescales and preferences. Truthfully, I wouldn’t have changed anything in our itinerary. I’ve also added links to the experiences that I booked, in case you’d like to book them, too!
