My review of The Magic by Rhonda Byrne has been long awaited at Intentional Lucie. Heck, I don’t know why it wasn’t my first blog post!

If you’re a regular here, sister, you’ll know that I’ve name-dropped The Magic on more than one occasion. It’s a 28-day gratitude practice by the law of attraction legend, Rhonda Byrne. It’s been a transformational part of my spiritual journey.

“The Magic is exactly that – magical. I had profound shifts and successes during both of the practices I completed”

However, completing the practice isn’t the easiest of feats – especially if your mindset isn’t in the best place before beginning. I’ve completed the practice twice successfully and twice unsuccessfully. So, I have thoughts and lessons to share in preparing to complete the 28 days (or more) to help you feel empowered by the experience.

What is The Magic by Rhonda Byrne about?

The Magic is a self-help book that focuses on the power of gratitude and its ability to transform your life in 28 days. It’s part of Rhonda’s series of books, including her very famous book that’s the first of the series, The Secret.

The Magic explores the power of gratitude as the key to unlocking abundance, with 28 lessons to help you cultivate the habit of practising. I’ve explored the benefits of gratitude in greater detail in my blog post, Your guide to gratitude and the law of attraction | Like attracts like.

The Magic book review

You’ll have probably gathered that I proudly served The Magic a five-star rating on Goodreads, and with good reason. In particular, there are two life-changing aspects of the book:

It’s a step back in time

The clue is in the title, but there is magic to be found in the experience of reading the book. From the whimsical design on the front cover to the traditional typeface on the pages, reading it feels as though I’m being transported back in time. Of course, the book was published in the past – in March 2012, to be exact. But, it’s portrayed to be much older, as if it’s been passed down from a sorcerer for generations. I love it.

The loving gratitude lessons

{If you don’t want to read any spoilers, skip this paragraph}

Beyond the reading experience, including the beautifully articulated introduction from Rhonda, the practices are where the magic truly happens. They begin with writing 10 blessings and ending each one using the magic words – thank you, thank you, thank you.

But, don’t be fooled by the simplicity of this practice, sister. In addition to writing 10 blessings for 28 days, you’ll find a gratitude rock to hold every evening and recall the best thing that happened to you that day for 27 days. Plus, there’s a third practice for 26 days, making The Magic a consuming process if you can’t dedicate the time. If you haven’t practised gratitude prior to starting The Magic, it’s safe to say that tuning into your mind, body and spirit can expel a lot of energy. So, be prepared.

Does The Magic really work?

Yes, The Magic is exactly that – magical. I had profound shifts and successes during both of the practices I completed. The first time, I received an agreement in principle to buy a house in London, no less, despite disregarding it as a financial possibility. Now, I own a two-bedroom house in London.

The second time, I saw a photo of two girls sitting on the edge of a rock in America which unlocked my unfulfilled dream of working at a summer camp in America. It sounds crazy – and was crazy given that I was hustling as a senior account manager in London at the time – but, I felt called to take inspired action and submit my application. I received a sabbatical from work and spent the summer of 2022 in America, living my Parent Trap dream.

Lessons and tips to complete The Magic

Above, I recall the two successful occasions I completed The Magic. But, I’ve also been unsuccessful – twice. Here are the lessons from these occasions to demonstrate how you can avoid the same fate.

Don’t take on too much

I was unsuccessful because, put simply, I took on too much at once. The first time I attempted it was on the same day as starting a new job, can you believe? I failed again two years later when I attempted to do it as part of a ‘new year, new me’ mentality in January, just after buying our house that required decorating and furnishing, alongside a strict HIIT workout and nutrition program, and during a difficult period at work.

Now, my wiser self knows that taking things one step at a time is more intentional than trying to do it all at once and risking burnout (I’ve been there). So, embarking on The Magic as a sole venture and without competing demands is the secret to succeeding.

Create a magic morning

I’m passionate about morning rituals and creating a morning routine. With this in mind, introducing The Magic into your mindfulness practice in the morning will keep you on track to complete the lessons. In my morning routine, I read a chapter of a book and complete a mindfulness practice as two separate activities. During The Magic, I combined these practices and it worked wonders.

Go back three days

The rules of The Magic are to go back three days if you don’t complete your gratitude practice on one of the days. Contrary to other opinions, I believe in Rhonda’s rule. Just remember – it’s not a failure if you go back three days. In fact, the first time I completed The Magic, I had to go back three days on more than one occasion. It just meant that I felt the gratitude for even longer.

When going through a period of low mood and wanting to change your mindset to one of gratitude and abundance, The Magic by Rhonda Byrne is worth its weight in gold.
